...There are both free and paid options. I personally use LinkVana, but I also build links by posting in relevant forums, leaving comments on blogs, submitting my site to directories, submitting articles to article directories, and creating simple software that I host on my site which literally forces authority websites to link to mine.

Well...that's all in a nutshell. There are a lot of other factors involved such as keyword research, writing quality articles/reviews on the products you're promoting, and actually taking ACTION in your link building and promotion activities.

The worst part is that they're not even sure if that traffic is interesting in purchasing something. There is a MAJOR difference between BUYER TRAFFIC and surfers on the information hunt ... a.k.a. "I'll take it if it's free..."
In addition, if you're using SEO and SEM techniques to get free, organic traffic then predicting results can be very difficult to measure until only AFTER your precious time and effort has been spent.
